Museum celebrates major milestone

Cumbria’s Lakeland Motor Museum has cause to celebrate in 2026 as the popular attraction marks its one millionth visitor at its purpose-built home in Backbarrow. 

The museum relocated to its new site in 2010 after outgrowing its previous location at Holker Hall.

A true mecca for motoring enthusiasts, the museum houses an impressive collection of more than 30,000 exhibits, featuring 140 classic cars and motorbikes which take visitors on a journey through motoring history.

Amongst its most eye-catching exhibits is the Campbell Bluebird Exhibition, a tribute to the racing careers of Sir Malcolm and Donald Campbell.

Highlights include full sized replicas of the 1935 Blue Bird car, 1939 Blue Bird Boat K4, 1967 jet hydroplane Bluebird K7 and a 1954 Series One owned by Donald Campbell.

It is finished in Bluebird Blue and the old-style log book records its first registration as October 10, 1954 with its first change of ownership (to Donald Campbell) on January 20, 1960.

The vehicle remained registered to Campbell until August 21, 1967 some eight months after his tragic accident on Coniston Water, whilst attempting to break the World Water Speed Record – January 4, 1967.

Over the years, the attraction has drawn famous faces from across the world.

Open year-round, Lakeland Motor Museum continues to welcome visitors of all ages, including four-legged friends.
